Does EFT really work?
I hear the question all the time- “Tapping-how can that work?” It’s a valid question. After all, most people have never seen or heard of anyone tapping on themselves to relieve symptoms. But it turns out EFT (and its forerunner, TFT) really work. And it’s been proven by science.
EFT is short for Emotional Freedom Techniques, a form of psychological acupressure that involves tapping on specific meridian points on the body while focusing on a particular issue or emotion. According to traditional Chinese medicine, meridians are paths through which the life-energy known as "qi" or “chi” flows.
The goal of tapping then, is to balance the body's energy system and alleviate emotional or physical distress.
EFT can benefit our health in many different ways:
Stress Reduction: Tapping on specific acupressure points is believed to send signals to the brain that help reduce the stress response. By doing so, EFT may help regulate the body's stress hormones and calm the nervous system. Cortisol levels (the stress hormone) were actually found to drop!
Disruption of the Thought Pattern: Tapping on meridian points is thought to interrupt the negative thought patterns associated with emotional distress. This interruption may help rewire the brain's response to a particular trigger or issue.
Release of Blocked Energy: Traditional Chinese medicine suggests that tapping on meridian points can help release blocked or stagnant energy, allowing it to flow freely through the body. This free flow of energy is believed to contribute to overall emotional and physical well-being.
Activation of the Relaxation Response: Tapping may stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and reducing the body's "fight or flight" response. Tapping has been found to lower heart rate and blood pressure
Tapping has been found to be useful in treating depression, anxiety, PTSD, phobias, and many other disorders.
As always, as a complementary therapy, not to be used in place of a physician’s care or prescribed medications.
